Think before you drink and cook this Christmas

Kent Fire and Rescue LogoCooking is the number one cause of fire in the home; but if you’re drinking alcohol and cooking it can be a recipe for disaster.

Rochester Crew Manager, Graham Porter, explained: “If you’ve been for a celebratory night out or enjoyed a drink at home and feel peckish, please don’t put the cooker on. It could result in you losing your home, precious belongings and even your life.

“A far safer option is to leave yourself a pre-prepared cold snack, or get a takeaway, that way you won’t be tempted to put the cooker on and put your safety at risk.”

Watch Manager, Tony Fox from Medway Fire Station added: “Alcohol can cause drowsiness, slowing your reaction times and lead to feelings of disorientation, which can make it difficult to escape in the event of a fire. You’ll also be less likely to wake up in an emergency.

“Please don’t take chances, we don’t want to gate crash your Christmas celebrations but want everyone to have a safe and happy festive period.”

Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s ‘Stand by Your Pan’ film tells the story of a man’s return home after a night out with friends, and how his hunger pangs lead him to dice with death, before being saved by fire angels.
