Candle warning following fire

Kent Fire and Rescue LogoKent Fire and Rescue Service has warned the public to take extra care when using candles over the Christmas holidays following a fire in Herne Bay.

Crews were called to a fire in a flat at Chislet Court, Herne Bay. They were confronted with a severely smoke logged property and had to use breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke.

It appears the fire was caused when a candle was accidentally knocked over. (more…)

Think pharmacy in Ashford during the festive period

Ashford CCGLocal pharmacies can offer a wealth of health support and should be the first port of call for common illnesses such as coughs and colds over the festive period.

That’s the message from NHS Ashford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) which is urging people across Ashford, Tenterden and the surrounding area to think of their pharmacy first for common minor ailments.

Dr Navin Kumta, Chair of the CCG, said: “At this time of year, many people get colds and visit their GP, when in reality a quick trip to the pharmacy is what they need.”

Pharmacies can provide much more than just a prescription. They can advise on minor ailments and how to use medications effectively and safely. (more…)

Calling your doctor

Ashford CCGPeople in Ashford are being reminded that GPs can often discuss symptoms over the phone – without the need to make a face-to-face appointment.

Clinical Chair of NHS Ashford Clinical Commissioning Group, Dr Navin Kumta, said: “Many patients believe that a face-to-face appointment with a GP is essential. But in many cases, the GP – who has access to a patient’s notes – is experienced enough to make a diagnosis of the condition over the phone.

“This can save patients the time and trouble of having to get to a surgery. It can also mean that you can avoid a GP surgery that may be full of patients coughing and sneezing and passing on germs. (more…)

Christmas Recycling & Refuse Collections 2015/16

recyclingAll refuse and recycling should be out for collection by 6am over Christmas and New Year. Please note collections may take place up to one day later than shown, with possible extra collections on Saturdays.

There will be NO garden or bulk collections for two weeks; w/c 28/12/2015 and w/c 04/01/2016 (except for those due for collection on Friday 25 December, which will be collected on Monday 28 December instead).

Help the NHS this Christmas

Ashford CCGPeople in Ashford and the surrounding area are being asked to help the NHS over Christmas and the New Year by avoiding putting unnecessary strain on medical services.

The request comes from Dr Navin Kumta, who chairs NHS Ashford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which plans and pays for the area’s health services.

Dr Kumta said: “The NHS is very busy in the lead-up to Christmas and between Christmas and the New Year. People sometimes call out of hours GP services or go to A&E for simple problems just because they haven’t thought ahead. (more…)
